Yellow Mag III
On the back of the long-standing success of the Yellow-Mag ll Pilot Ladder Magnet worldwide, Serpent & Dove—Applied Magnetics has introduced its patented Yellow-Mag lll Switchable Pilot Ladder Magnet.
The major advantage of Yellow-MAG lll is the safety of not being always ‘on’.
This removes entirely the risk of finger-pinching or unintentional and inadvertent clamping of the magnet to steel surfaces and also makes for easier storage.
Yellow-Mag lll has a similar footprint to Yellow-Mag II and provides the same ~450 Kgs breakaway strength and uses soft mounting of the switchable magnet to the familiar yellow HDPE base, which provides further stability to the assembly. The base also has a non-slip coating.
At a little over 4 Kgs, the rare earth magnet assembly uses no electric power but is actuated by the two actions of pushing down and rotating clockwise the switch on top by 180 degrees. De-activation is by push down and rotation anti-clockwise. The magnet assembly itself has been encased in Hypalon for moisture-resistance. A rated stainless steel eye bolt for tie-off is provided on the side of the magnet. A HDPE handle makes Yellow-Mag lll easy to carry and manipulate.

Yellow Mag II:
Developed in conjunction with professional marine pilots this Patented option uses rare earth magnets that are always 'on' (Patent NL2011620). Be sure to ask for Patented Serpent & Dove Yellow Mag II or Yellow-Mag III (see above). Beware of copycat products.
Yellow Mag II superseded its heavier predecessor (and inferior copies). Magnet mountings and base plate flex to better accommodate rough surfaces like paint, corrosion scale, weld seams and curvature of ship hulls, ensuring maximum grip in adverse conditions. Beware of inferior and out-dated copies of Yellow Mag II. Yellow-Mag II can also be used as a magnet to secure Accommodation Ladders and floating oil spill booms and maintenance vessels.
Improved, Patented (NL2011620) Yellow Mag II Pilot Ladder Magnet features include:
- 1.6 Kgs lighter in weight than old steel-based versions
- N42 grade or better neodymium magnet material.
- Flexible base and magnet mounts
- Better grip on rough surfaces
- Stainless steel ring for tie off
- >450 kg gripping power per unit but removes easily with lever handle
Supplied as single units or in set of 4 in strong marine ply box

Pilot ladder security
Such as Yellow MagII for use during Pilot transfer has been mandated by the International Marine Pilots Association. Yellow MagII is used by many fleets worldwide, including the entire BP tanker fleet.
